Connecting With Young Clients Through Play Therapy in Maitland, FL

Children express things differently from adults. Because of this, traditional talk therapy isn’t always useful. Play therapy, on the other hand, offers a developmentally appropriate approach to communication, processing challenges, and building coping skills. Play therapy is one of the tools we use at Image and Likeness Counseling to connect with our youngest clients in Maitland, Florida. But is it as simple as playing your way to better mental health?

What Does Play Therapy Look Like?

Play therapy uses toys, games, and other imaginative activities as tools for expression. In a session, a child therapist may provide dolls, building blocks, puppets, or drawing materials, allowing children to act out scenarios or express feelings they may not yet have the words to describe. The therapist then observes play themes and behaviors. Sessions are structured yet flexible, designed to meet each child’s individual needs.

When Is Play Therapy the Best Option?

Play therapy is often used with children who are struggling emotionally, socially, or behaviorally. It can be beneficial for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Behavioral challenges, such as anger or defiance
  • Coping with divorce or relocation
  • Processing trauma or bullying
  • Developing social skills and self-confidence

Play therapy provides a bridge between a child’s inner world and what’s happening in real life. Through guided play, children learn healthy ways to express their feelings and build important problem-solving skills. If their struggles are related to some external issue, they can work through those difficult experiences in a safe environment.
